About the job
We are looking for a Associate Professor in the field of Process Systems Engineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering. The process systems engineering group deals with the overall system behaviour and how the individual units should be combined to achieve optimal overall performance.
Important topics are multi-scale process modelling, operation and control, design and synthesis, simulation, statistics and optimization. Applications include distillation, reactors, system biology and subsea processing.We are seeking candidates with a large potential for leadership in research and education, and a strong commitment to high-quality research within the field of Process Systems Engineering.
Experience with one or more of the following research fields is of interest:
- Computational approaches for process engineering
- Process optimization
- Process control
- Statistical methods, artificial intelligence and machine learning for PSE
- Process modelling and process and product design
The available position is affiliated with the Process Systems Engineering Group at the Department of Chemical Engineering. Applicants are expected to complement the current research activities at the department.
You will report to the Head of Department.
Responsibilities
- Contributing to teaching subjects in the Process Systems Engineering field, such as modelling, optimization, process control, as well as other basic chemical engineering courses
- Developing and maintaining an internationally recognized research track record within the subject area through high quality publications and participation at international conferences
- Acquiring research funding from national and international funding agencies
- Collaborate in research and teaching activities within the department
- Strengthen the existing research profile of the department, and expand the international and industrial collaboration
- Educate and supervise students at BSc and MSc level. Supervising PhD and postdoctoral fellowships
Qualifications required
You must have the qualifications required for the position as associate professor in the field of Process Systems Engineering, as outlined in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4.
- PSE Background. Your PhD, or academic work of same scope and quality must be within the field of Process Systems Engineering. A minimum of two years of research experience after your phd is required. This experience should be within the core area of the position.
- Research. You have a track record of international publications in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings, as well as experience in the acquisition and/or participation in funded research projects.
- English. Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
- Teaching. Ability and interest in teaching basic chemical engineering courses
You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language will be able to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.
Preferred qualifications
- Supervision. Experience with leading research and (co-) supervising students on Master and PhD level.
- Research. Experience with initiating and leading research projects, and writing grant applications (NFR, EU)
- External. Experience with industrial/external/international collaboration
- Teaching. Experience in teaching and formal pedagogical qualifications.

Salary and conditions
In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will be remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
Employment will be granted in accordance with the principles outlined in the Civil Service Act, and the regulations concerning the export of expertise, technology, and services. Applicants should be aware that there may be changes in the working environment after employment has commenced.
It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

Group work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a group project, you must include evidence of your contributions.
While considering the best-qualified applicants, we will pay particular attention to personal qualities, your motivation for applying for the position, and your pedagogical skills and qualifications. Our assessment will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.
NTNU is required to oblige by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
Your application will be considered by an expert committee. Candidates of interest will be invited to do a trial teaching session and an interview.
